The Ancient 1st Century port of Magdala

A Hidden Synagogue in the Galilee

This synagogue, located off the beaten path in the Galilee, offers a unique glimpse into the layers of history preserved in the region.

The visible structure was built around the 7th century AD and was later destroyed during the earthquake of 749 AD, which affected large parts of the area.

Beneath this later building lies an earlier structure. While its exact function is not fully known, many scholars believe it may have served as the main village synagogue during the 1st century AD—the time of Jesus.

If this interpretation is correct, the site reflects a continuous place of worship spanning several centuries, connecting the early Jewish communities of the Galilee with later periods of development.

Hidden from the main tourist routes, this synagogue highlights how many important biblical-era locations remain quietly preserved across the landscape—waiting to be rediscovered.
